Punta Campanella: the Trail and the Marine Protected Reserve

Punta Campanella is the place where the Sorrento Peninsula meets the Amalfi Coast, offering a wonderful view of Capri. It is the ideal spot for hiking enthusiasts.

Punta Campanella: Between History and Legend

Punta Campanella is the place where the Sorrento Peninsula meets the Amalfi Coast, and it has always been a land rich in history and legends. According to Homer's Odyssey, this is where Odysseus encountered the enchanting sirens. Later, the Greeks built a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena on this stretch of land, which was later converted by the Romans and dedicated to the goddess Minerva.

In 1334, the Angevins commissioned a square-based tower on the cliff’s edge, which had a strategic lookout position to spot Saracen raids coming from the sea.
At the top of the tower, a bell was placed that rang in case of alarm to alert other towers along the coast. This is where the name Punta Campanella comes from.

Today, you can still see the Saracen tower and a steep staircase that leads down to the cliffs, connecting to caves and crevices at sea level, where ships laden with gifts for the goddess Minerva used to dock.
