Which are the most important places on the Amalfi Coast you may want to reach?
The Amalfi Coast is located in the province of Salerno, south of Naples. Before finding out which are the best options to choose in order to get to the Amalfi Coast, it is important to be aware that the Coast stretches along a strip of land and its main towns are located one by one along the coast from north to south. The first town on the Amalfi Coast you will find coming from the north is Positano, continuing along the SS163 road, you will then get to: Praiano, Amalfi, Minori, Maiori, Cetara and finally Vietri sul Mare. For this reason, it is very important, in terms of time, cost and convenience, to have a clear idea of the final destination to reach.
The best connected Amalfi Coast towns, via several means of transportation are: Amalfi and Positano.
However, the main transport hubs in Campania are the cities of Naples and Salerno. They are connected to the rest of the cities of Campania and Italy by: buses, high-speed trains, regional trains and planes.
There are different ways to reach the Amalfi Coast from Naples and from Salerno, let's find out which they are: the main public transport is the SITA buses, followed by ferries and lastly there is the option of taxis or private transfers by land or sea.
Unfortunately, the Amalfi Coast cannot be reached by train, except for the town of Vietri sul Mare, which has a direct train connection to Salerno.
How to get to the Amalfi Coast from Salerno
During the period between April and October, the main towns on the Amalfi Coast are connected to Salerno by ferry.
Ferries from Salerno depart from the Molo Masuccio Salernitano (Piazza della Concordia), which is not far from the train station, and the following towns can be reached: Positano, Amalfi, Maiori, Minori, Cetara and Vietri sul Mare.
How to get to the Amalfi Coast from Naples
If you land at Naples Capodichino airport, you will have two options to get to the Amalfi Coast:
Getting to Sorrento: Outside Terminal 1 of Naples Capodichino Airport, take the Curreri company bus to Sorrento. The cost of the ticket is approximately €10 to be paid to the driver directly.
Getting to Naples Central Station: Outside Terminal 1 of the airport, take the "Alibus" bus to the centre of Naples, which will take you to Naples Central Station (Piazza Garibaldi) in approximately 30 minutes. The ticket costs about 5€ and can be purchased directly on board, at a surcharge of 1€.
Once at the main train station, you have two options to reach the Amalfi Coast:
Take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, the local train connecting Naples to Sorrento. Once in Sorrento from the train station, take one of the SITA buses that connect the Sorrento Peninsula to the Amalfi Coast.
If, on the other hand, you want to reach Amalfi, Maiori, Minori, Ravello or Salerno, from the central station in Naples take a regional train to Salerno (40 minutes), and from Salerno then continue by ferry (the maritime station is in front of the Salerno station) or by SITA bus.
The Amalfi Coast can be reached by train from Naples.
It is possible to take a Circumvesuviana train from the Corso Garibaldi station in Naples to Sorrento. The frequency is approximately one train every 20 minutes and the journey takes one hour and 10 minutes. Get off at Sorrento. Once there, you can take a ferry to Amalfi. The duration of the ride is approximately one hour.
Alternatively, you can take a train to Salerno (journey time about 40 minutes), and from Salerno then continue by ferry or SITA bus.
How to get to the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento
Unfortunately, there is no train connection between Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Alternatively, the main towns on the Amalfi Coast can be reached from Sorrento by bus or ferry.
How to get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome
The trip from Rome to the Amalfi Coast can be very long: consider a minimum of 4 hours from the moment you land, assuming you are lucky with all connections. If your flight lands in the afternoon, consider spending a night in Rome or Naples before departing for the Amalfi Coast.
How to get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome Fiumicino airport
From Rome Fiumicino airport, it is possible to take the Leonardo Express train to Roma Termini, Rome's main railway station. Then from here you can continue by train to Naples or Salerno.
Train connections available between Rome and Naples/Salerno:
High speed Freccia Rossa: is certainly the most convenient option, but also the most expensive. In about two hours you will be at Salerno station. Trains of this type leave every hour and are usually extremely on time. The cost is about €40.
Intercity: are mid-range trains and connect Rome to Salerno in about three hours. The cost is about €20.
Interregional: trains stopping at all stations and in every city. It takes about 4 hours to travel from Rome to Naples. The ticket costs 10 €, we only recommend it if you are travelling on a very tight budget.
Alternatively, from Rome Fiumicino airport you can also take a direct bus to Naples Piazza Garibaldi.
